Building Arena teams

I've been messing around with arena teams trying to find a definitive answer to the question:
What's the best way to generate points in arenas?

Obviously points are based on the number of stars and PI of both your team and the AI generated teams, with the AI generating teams based on who you've picked.

Working under the premise of a Basic 4* champ arena, I use the following champs:

1 R5 4*
8 R4 4*
29 R3 4*
1 R2 4*

29 R4 3*
4 R3 3*

Typically, I'll do a "best 3" available champs and try to throw in a synergy when I can, which basically results in:

3 teams of R4/R5 4*
10 teams of R2/R3 4*
10 team of R3/R4 4* (never more than on R3 per team)

Would I be better off mixing up my higher ranked 4* to maximize synergies with R3 champs (maybe even a 3*)? Something like my R4 AA, R3 Phoenix, 3* Psylocke. Or even 4* Dorm, 3* Dorm and 3* Hood.

Also, is there any significant point difference in picking the middle or bottom matchup as opposed to just quickly clicking the default top one?

PS: I've used this website and is helpful, but noticed not all the synergies are correct (i.e. shows a Dorm - Guilly synergy instead of Dorm-Hood)
