Hello,
Why not make the fights take place local, on the phone / tablet and only the results to be send to server?
This will minimize the problems related to lags and freeze. Most likely the game will increase in size but I don't see this as an issue.
Even the fights in the arenas can be played entirely on the user side and in the end, 3 results will be passed to server.
I'm sure you already took this into consideration and if you did... can you share us why you use the present system and not the one that puts pressure on the phone and not on the connection?
This is not an easy change like ... increasing the number of friends to 50 ... but maybe you will provide an answer.
