What happens when defenders aren’t placed on tiles?

5 unique defenders have been brought into war, but aren’t placed on tiles, so we can’t arrange them.

If the player does not wake up and place them—what happens?

Will our diversity score go down by 5 because even though they are in there, we can’t place them on nodes?

I thought the game automatically placed them on empty nodes when attack starts?
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought that's what happens
