Against strong opponents : spam heavy and fire off SP3 ASAP (rinse and repeat). Soon you'll have an opponent with 3 plasmas. After that spam SP1. Soon the enemy will be destroyed
Against medium strength opponents : Same as previous strategy but instead use SP2 then SP1. The reason for this is that SP2 and SP1 does more overall damage than just firing SP3 (which is helpful against weaker enemies, but doesn't help much with bosses).
