Abyss Nexus forced choice

Being an upper mid player who spends some on the game I’m nearing the time when I explore the Abyss. From what I’ve seen in videos, you are forced to choose the class of your nexus crystal immediately...but I’d really like to see what T5CC I get before I make that decision.
Does this in fact operate like I describe and do you think we can change it?
