Serum Science does not seem to work

I know this is a very rarely used mastery, but I took serum science to 5/5 because I thought the massive +960 energy resistance would make my r3 torch better able to withstand the chip damage from an r3 doom t1 war boss. Doom light and medium attacks supposedly do energy damage.
However, after ranking serum science to 5/5, doom was still doing the same massive damage (about 2k for a blocked light hit) as before.
Shouldn’t almost 1000 energy resist make a difference when blocking an attack that does energy damage? Why doesn’t it? Is this stupidly expensive mastery even working at all??
