Usage of AW defender in a quest.

I know that you can use the champ in any quest before alliance war attack starts. What I want to know is if I fail to complete a quest before AW attack starts, is the defender placed or is the spot just empty. I was under the assumption that the defender gets placed because when I complete the quest, I cannot use the champ again till the war ends/we take out the boss and release our champs. An alliance mate said that the champs are locked and they are not placed if they are in a quest when attack starts. So, can someone tell me who is correct?

No it's placed, and you'll be allowed to finish your Quest.
