So obviously we only know the first path but here's the best counters some top players recommended: Magik, Medua, Hyperion. With the exception of maybe one person with a duped six star medusa they are all exclusive 5*. Here's what Kabam said when introducing the gauntlet:

So I don't know, hopefully the other paths show that you do actually need rank 3s or this is kind of silly

Abyss was meant to test our 5 and 6* rosters. Yet people beat fights with 2 star champs.

Just because content is tuned for R3, that doesn't mean R3 will be the only way to do it.

Most people forget that there's a 30% difference between R2 and R3 6*. There's only a few % difference between R5 5* and R2 6*. Of course R5s will be used.
