How does Critical Resistance work?

I've never been exactly sure how this mechanic works. Does it mean that if a champion gets hit with a critical hit that they take less damage from it, or does it mean that the opponents chance of landing a critical hit is reduced?

Chance of landing a crit on that champion is reduced

Critical resistance reduces the chance of a hit being critical.

Critical damage resistance reduces the damage taken by critical hits.
