Diablo really only needs his sig if you're running suicides since that continuous poison will keep it up throughout the fight. Otherwise it's a very niche piece of utility.
Cosmic Ghost Rider has a really nice sig ability that is very overlooked - buff and heal control is useful in so very many scenarios - but I wouldn't pump a generic awakening gem into him just for that.
Cap has one of the best sig abilities in the game since it completely revolutionizes his character from a brawly damage-dealer to a utility power-house. However, you need max sig for some of those utilities to be truly reliable. If you're in a high-stakes fight, you can't afford to have a huge bleed stick on you just because he's sig 160 and only has an 85% chance to purify it. If you have the sig stones to take him to sig 200 then he's a good alternative, but otherwise...
Nick Fury's second life is simply amazing. Like Cap's sig, Nick's simply transforms the entire champion. He still has some of the craziest bleeds in the entire game and can even deal with bleed-immune champions due to the massive fury that he gets. I used him in one of the Summer of Pain fights last year, that he was (on paper) not supposed to be able to handle since it was an extremely tough robot (I think). However, he crushed it regardless. I just went unblockable and didn't ever let up. There is something insanely satisfying about reaching that stage where you're just unblockable all the time and can just wail in on the opponent.
I wish I had Nick as a 6*, and if I did, I would probably pump my generic awakening gem into him. Simultaneously, I already have an unawakened Cap and I do not feel the need to use a gem on him since I don't have the stones to sig him up properly.
