I just pulled him from a 6* featured crystal but I don't know if I should bother spending rank up stuff on him.

    can't use galan on him. only great counter for him really is hulkling. Rank him for BG and War Defense and some niche quest lanes. He does have great sp2 damage if you get his rotation down

    I will try him out and see if he's worth an awakening gem and rank 3.

    He’s great, super tanky, so much control over the fight with his power control, and his damage is very good. Very useful as both an attacker and a defender.

    I took him to rank 3 but did not use a generic awakening gem on him yet. Should I?

    a generic gem should be used if you enjoy the character. Play around with him first. See if you like him. Then invest in him. Dont take the word of strangers as gospel.
