MCOC Subreddits Made Private?

NeoDazarasNeoDazaras Member Posts: 125
I'm trying to browse the MCOC subreddits and it seems they've all been made private for some reason. The Recruitment sub, the main sub, even the Arena results sub is locked. Does anyone know why this happened or what prompted it?

Something something reddit changing API thing, users don't like that and are protesting by making sub's private

Oooooh that makes sense. Thanks for the info!

(more specific, but still just a general understanding)

Yep, Reddit was making monetizing changes, was going to start charging for API usage by channels, which sometimes could end up being quite a large amount.

So there is a broad Reddit community effort (well beyond MCOC) to show their displeasure with that.

And something about making channels Private would help that (?), (or lessen the Advertising revenue that Reddit itself would generate from them ?)

The blackout was supposed to end on Wed, and many Reddit pages are live again. However it seems like many of the MCOC related ones have continued to pursue the blackout protest. Not sure if it's purposeful or if the subreddit page mods forgot or if there are just some really passionate people and they're gonna make a stand no matter what everyone else does.

To add onto this. The reason communities chose to go private is because Reddit is very reliant on their communities to function. The more communities go private, the less reddit has to suggest to people visiting the site and the less on ads they make (I believe) I saw several cases of the site being completely broken if you weren't navigating via direct link to a subreddit

Not a Reddit user, just have a few pages Bookmarked for there for occasional reference.

Like Act-5 and Act-6 guides, which seem to be Wiki's up there, as well as the Arena Points entry page (which is where that person accumulates the data they then turn into their Arena Cutoff Spreadsheet, which is a different Root channel, “ContestOfChampsArena”, from the main “ContestOfChampions”).

But so, taking the alternate site mentioned by @HungaryHippo earlier as example, if I go there, and basically see just a bunch of individuals posting stuff, are there actual sub-channels (sub-reddits, or whatever the term is) on that main page ? (Like the 2 Wiki ones for Act 5, 6, guides I have bookmarked)
I didn’t see offhand where to see subReddits within it, other than just individual posts.

Or in other words, what is the difference between individual posts, and the links I have that specifically say “Wiki” in the Reddit webpage (and how to find “Wiki” categories, or aren’t there any, on that other mentioned “MarvelContestOfChamps” Reddit) ?

Not a huge reddit user but from what I understand the API changes can range into the tens of thousands annually depending on how large the third party site is. It's basically a big push to get those sites shut down and force people to go through the Reddit app/webpage directly to generate larger ad revenue.
It was supposed to be a 2 day blackout but the CEO yesterday (?) basically gave a middle finger to the whole effort during a press conference, which is why some communities are staying closed.

While there is a fair amount of rank up threads, there is plenty of other content. As more people migrate to it, I'm sure the content when also change.

I feel like the original subreddit mods are shooting themselves in their feets by driving people awhile with this blackout nonsense. Why should anyone go back to them if and whenever they open it up again when there's a perfectly good subreddit that filled in the void after they gave everyone the boot.

They're not worried about losing members, they're worried about losing their integrity. Reddit is specifically showing and freely admitting to being anti consumer by enforcing changes that do nothing but benefit the company and harm the users. People who are willing to go without the site are showing why they matter to the structure of it. As much as the mcoc subreddit benefits the community, I sincerely hope that every single person here would do the same if shown that level disrespect.

my issue with these reddit protests is that reddit can (and seemingly have, in some cases) simply just remove the existing moderators of a subreddit and replace them with ones that will not blackout the sub

Fair enough. I freely admit I'm not aware of the nuances of the situation. I was just very miffed that, without warning, I suddenly had no access to the subreddit.

    Well, all right then.

I guess I just don't notice any of the stickies largely because I typically visit via notifications sent via the app. That and when I do visit the main page, my eyes usually glaze pass the stickies in general. Ah, well.

You must be one of the mods. Did you panic because the other sub gained hundreds of subs in a couple days? LOL
