Champions have 2 states, their rank and level, and if they're ascended or not. The ascended stats look at the current rank and level and add their boost.

Long story short, if you ascend a r1 and then r5 them, they'll have the exact same stats as if you waited to ascend. It would be dumb to punish players for ascending early.
