Can't use AW defender on AQ attack, even when not in war.

My alliance typically does 2 BG war, with the occasional 3 BG war. I am not a fan of war so I am in BG3 and 9/10 times am not participating in any active war. Can anyone explain why I am not able to use AW defenders on AQ attack, when my BG is not in an active war?

AQ is the one mode champs are locked into now, so you can't have champs in a quest or in aw
If this was bypassed by simply turning bgs off and then you could enter AQ, it's a potential skate
Although this would also not make much sense if you intend to play aw since your champs would be locked in AQ
But if you don't play AW... I really am failing to see the problem lol
Even if a defender is NOT in what your “Current Tier” is, they are still considered “locked”.
Hopefully the system will be more accurate/forgiving in the future (such that if there is no possible way that particular defenders might actually get “put into play” for *any* AW during the course of what the current AQ day would be, that they should be able to be used for that day's AQ), but for now it is what it is.
It would be complex to do, and lots of (well, it was only a couple hours of potential overlapping time) complaints. So the current system is just easiest to implement.
