What's the point of the patcher?

I'm confused - what is the point of the internal game patcher if you still have to download updates from the app store?

Seems like twice the work to get an update now.

I think "the patcher" allows them to push out certain fixes between updates that would of required putting a update out on the stores.

Considering putting an update out on Google or iStore costs $$$$, this decision was likely made as a cost-cutting measure.
