Spending on champs before knowing how good they'll be

I was talking about this with my alliance when asked if I'm going for Lumatrix and Cyclops. With the very lengthy champ evaluation period Kabam has, and the new move to buff champs less frequently and in batches, it's a bit of a hard sell to start investing in these new and new-to-be-buffed champs months out of their release without at a base knowing what they'll be like on release, and then knowing they could be changed 6 months after release.
And please save your "well you don't have to buy them" comments, they add nothing to the actual discussion

We have opened crystals without knowing which champ we'll get.
Now, they want us to spend on champs without knowing anything about them.
MCOC is not a product, it is a service. The game is constantly changing, and there are no guarantees being made about anything, nor are there ever going to be. The value proposition of any purchase depends on a lot of things, and none of those things are static. A purchase could be superceded by a future one that is better or cheaper. The useability of the contents could change over time. In particular champions can be rebalanced if the game team deems this necessary. The champion could also remain exactly the same but a better champ in key areas could come out next month. The things that champ are really good at might never appear again in future content. The various metas of the game could shift in ways disadvantageous to that champ.
You are spending money or units in an ever shifting environment, and you need to make your decisions accordingly. If certainty is what you need, this game is not going to give it to you, and it never will. The game will simply have to maintain itself on the players who are capable of functioning in such an environment.
You are not the first, nor will you be the last, to complain about not having certainty in a game as a service. The devs are aware that this is not tolerable for some people. This game is not for them.
Buffed Phoenix *basically free* - we have Phoenix as the Saga chase champ, which is essentially a free 7* champion for those of high enough skill. With the overflow, if they don't complete everything, they may have to buy a $5 offer or two. This is also a champ we have a full Buff breakdown of already in the champion spotlight. While we haven't seen her in action, this is absolutely the closest you could get.
Buffed 90's Cyclops *guaranteed by spending $25-30* - we know Cyclops is at the end of the Platinum double track. The double track is an incredible value when you also include a guaranteed 7* at the end. However, we know absolutely nothing about his kit, so complaints about spending not knowing what you're getting are occurring, and they're valid. But the stretch days of the track (past 84) don't really hold much value at all anyways, so you can easily wait until right before the track ends to snag him once his full abilities are revealed.
Lumatrix Eidol *basically have to spend, how much depends on level* - all we know is that this Kabam original will be a Skill champ. This champ, and probably future Eidol champs, are somewhat like Deathless last year, except instead of them being only Endgame-chase champions, these are Endgame-spenders champions. With each of the 12 required Light Essences being locked behind only the highest of rewards strewn across every area, it's a near requirement that you'll have to spend ($10 per light essence) multiple times to obtain them.
Now, of all three methods, I am certainly happy that the Kabam-original champion is the one being most exclusive and elusive and requiring either the highest skill, biggest spend, or both. Because it's not an existing Marvel character with existing lore and fans, I don't have to worry about it being someone really cool I have to chase.
With Phoenix, I love the character, and if I play enough, she should be easy enough for me to get. I may end up having to spend on a couple of Daily offers but that's fine. With Cyclops, the fact that he WON the audience vote and now is GUARANTEED to anyone who spends $25 feels like the right choice. And for the Eidol, I don't have to waste a second of my time, energy, or money chasing him. Imagine if it was Mystique or Lizard or Spider Woman locked behind this.
My biggest annoyance is still that since all of these are happening concurrently, you only get ONE plume for buying both the Daily AND the weekly offer, when in the past you'd get 2 for the weekly, except now with these events it's ONE plume and ONE light essence... you know, that thing I don't care about and don't want at all? I wish I could buy the much better value Weekly offer and get two plumes instead of just the one. THAT honestly makes me really annoyed.
