Why are Nightmare raids supposed to be difficult

From what I have seen others get from chests and what I got from them as well, the buff to the rewards don't seem anything significant. The exploration rewards are nice but nothing amazing. Tier 4 alpha and 7 stars are more available nowadays.
So my question is why are nightmare raids supposed to be some difficult piece of content to complete when they offer only marginally better rewards. I don't think anyone was asking for a new difficulty for raids. The base raids could gotten the buffed rewards and it would have been better overall.

You could say the same thing about every difficult piece of content in the game. I'm sure a lot of players would be happy if the end game content was less difficult and had more rewards. I'm sure they would say this would be "better overall." However, that content is probably not for them in the first place.
AQ was always meant to be a challenging, alliance coordinated piece of content. But for a variety of reasons, that's not what the vast majority of players had come to expect from AQ, and instead of making it more challenging and more coordinated, AQ was made more simple and routine for the majority of players who wanted something less stressful. Raids were introduced to provide a place for the original intent of AQ to live, leaving the players who didn't want that to continue to do standard AQ. The whole point of raids was to give the players who wanted that experience the option to do it, and for everyone else to have the option to opt out.
Nightmare raids are exactly the same thing. Bugs notwithstanding, they are intended to be optional for those who wanted something tougher. But if you don't, then don't.
I am sure some people would say that but difference is the rewards offered in those other difficult content were top of the game rewards like rank 4 materials, awakening gem shards, titan nexus etc. It should be difficult and not something everyone can do. I personally enjoyed epoch, ordeal and necro carina challenges for the most part and they had a great effort to reward ratio. Nightmare rewards do not offer anything similar to that but still have a big difficultly spike. To be clear I am not saying they should have rewards equivalent to other endgame content, but currently whatever they offer could have just been in regular raids.
I didn't really get the impression that raids were supposed to be something challenging. They weren't very easy but neither were they too difficult. The rewards also reflected that, nothing too crazy but not bad either. For me it was something to look forward to after three weeks of monotonous aq. Nightmare raids seems like something difficult to do but the rewards do not reflect that. Obviously we can choose to opt out of it but I was hoping regular raids would get some reward update since it has been a year and they have stayed the same.
I would guess there are now thousands of summoners in the situation where Nightmare is too hard for them to make it feasible and the normal raids aren’t enough of a challenge and have become boring.
