The Unfortunate Side Effect of buffed Act 5 rewards…

So I came across this reddit post by some user who was complaining about who they were matched against for Battlegrounds and shared a clip of it… The hilarious thing was that they were matched against a user who had only three rank 5 6* champions and none of their 7*s were past rank 1.

People in the comments basically told them to progress through the story acts, get better titles, and get better and higher ranked champions. They were ABSOLUTELY not having this construcive criticism and instead viewed it as a flaw of the game.

Here’s the thing: they were being a little B word complaining about everything, and refusing to progress in the game - but they weren’t exactly wrong in their initial statement, that “Until they buff act 6 rewards i feel like I’m at a point in my progression where unless I do somehing like Battlegrounds I’m just not getting anywhere.”

This person is inherently wrong with that thinking because they need to progress to the highest title availble before they could actually legitimately start complaining about rewards… but they’re not exactly wrong either, which is a problem Kabam has created for themselves.

But here’s where i circle it back to the main issue and the main question - if Kabam decides to buff Act 5 rewards in the way that they did, and the majority of the rest of the competition remains untouched or barely modified, how are they not going to expect sentiments and reactions like this? The hilarious thing is they kept mentioning how butthurt I apparenlty was by buffed act 5 rewards, when that was never anything I expressed - only “keep progressing and get better and stronger if you want the better and stronger rewards” and their response was “why should I because the rewards aren’t good” and as much as I’m annoyed by their annoying complaining and not trying mindset - they’re not wrong in that aspect.

My genuine question to Kabam is… what did you expect from this, and what do you plan to do in the future? Because making it easier for newer players - like this one that says they were “given a 7* without ever having to be Cavalier” - but making the rest of the contest not seem “worth it” to work as hard and grind as much as we do does very much seem valid.

I mean i see where the intitled low end account is coming from they already confirmed they are looking into buffing the act 6 rewards they probly dont want to rush it cause then if it is over 90 days since they completed it they will be missing out on getting them

They are extending the time before new players hit a wall hoping they will become spenders before they quit or at least stay a bit longer. The wall used to be act 5, now it’s act 6. Hopefully there’s not another nerf to Act 6 that enables them to move even further into the game before building skills.

Act 6 and beyond were too difficult to begin with. Its the nodes not the health pools. A path fight in act 6 is harder than a boss fight in pre nerf act 5 excluding the collector. The bosses in act 6 are harder than LOL fights with addition of ridiculous nodes. There's no balance there. I don't think "the wall" should exist as part of milestone progression in story. Even skilled players struggle that suggests its unnecessarily hard. There should have been another game mode that players who want the modern day version of beyond hope difficulty could go to and challenge themselves

In all honesty it's because newer players will most likely be younger and the new generation of gamers don't spend time practicing the game itself. All they want is immediate gratification.

All my friends are afraid of mcoc since it wants you to read a lot of stuff. Honestly most people prefer something simple like candy Crush for playing whenever they get time. Most of the hardcore gamers usually target PC or console games, or the generic battleroyale style games in Mobile.

The game doesn’t do a good job of teaching new players how to play it or how to adjust to the different nodes and modifiers. Back when I started playing eight years ago, it took me a while to realize certain path fights and boss fights had other modifiers attached to them. I thought they just continued to increase the rarity level of the defender or maybe added a health multiplier to them. It took a while before I realized that certain fights had to be fought a certain way. In fact, I don’t even think I realized it, I think, watching Youtubers like Seatin or Dork, mentioning nodes and bringing up the node menu is what made me begin to look at that stuff. So much of the necessary info about how to play this game correctly is on YouTube, but I highly doubt most new players are going to YouTube to learn how to play the game, and even if they do, a lot of those videos are super old now. The game really does need a more in-depth training mode.

Entitled assumption nothing to do with age. Most of the skilled mcoc youtubers are young

    2 issues at hand here:

    1) lowering/eliminating progression title requirements for BG access plus this initiative:

led to where we are now. Whether it's yielding the results they wanted, they can speak to it themselves.

    2) the sweet spot of users currently is Thronebreaker, where you're close enough to Paragon/Valiant rewards that you're likely to spend. To that end, removing story content barriers to get to Tb, and especially enhancing rewards for those who do run story gets new users to the sweet spot Tb that much faster. My test alt created right before banquet is Tb but has never actually broken any thrones:

The goal for this account is to wait out removal of Paragon and eventually Valiant story gates and see if accrual of champs over time gets the job done. Of course, I'm not running this account thru BGs, but that's where the game is at.

The reason BG's is a niche mode is because lower accounts have no desire to wait out the 8-10 minutes it takes to match, draft, fight timers, post match screens instead of forfeiting. I don't blame them either. Instead of adjusting the matchmaking so that everyone fights everyone, they could have left it and capped out progress for lower accounts to prevent them from entering GC to begin with.

The screenshot of the discussion that was posted hit the nail on the head. BG's are offered to uncollected and above. If it is offered, it should be playable for them. Same with rewards. People aren't going to play a game mode that isn't rewarding.

Same can be said of Act content. If they don't buff the rewards, people that automatically have access to higher rarities aren't going to play content that rewards low tier resources benefitting low tier champs, especially when resource management is important.

If you can 100% act 5 and get all those rewards, then you should be clearing act 6.

The reward for clearing act 6 isn’t whatever crystals and catalysts. It’s access to the act 7 and 8 and 9 rewards.

Anyway, they said an act 6 buff was likely coming. The goal should be to push as far as skills and roster allow within story content, clearing one path per quest. Once you do that, explore in reverse order as you deem appropriate and possible.

Without spending new accounts can acquire 6 and 7 star easily without touching act 6

After leaving that comment, I realized I hadn’t actually tried out the tutorial mode considering I was already a veteran when it came out, so I just did it and…

Literally, the only tutorial is how to parry. No intercepting, no heavy countering, no heavy canceling, no special baiting, no mention of nodes, nothing to teach new players the skills they need to advance in the game

To be fair, they do teach a decent amount about nodes. I’ve been playing through the early game on my no crystal account and there are specific quests where they introduce you to regular nodes, linked nodes, global nodes, etc. Everything else you mentioned could probably use a bit of an explicit explanation in game, though.
