What is the best 5 in general to take into a story or event quest? There are soo many synergies in the game now it’s hard to get a handle on which squad to take.

Depends on the content that you're doing. Countering nodes is the key to successfully pushing through content, so it's a matter of bringing the right champs for a given situation. The further you progress in content, the more diverse your roster needs to be because of the diversity of node combinations that you'll face.
There are a few champs that are usable in most content, but if your whole goal is to just have a top 5 and only bring them, then it's only gonna work for so long until you get stuck. Rank up champs you enjoy playing and are comfortable with, then bring along more champs based on where you need counters.
