Locked Champs

I want to equip a relic on one of my champs that was placed on defence in AW.

We are not currently enlisted in AW so I removed myself from the battlegroup.

I am still receiving the message that champ is locked in a quest.

Is this a ticket, waiting game, or is there a known workaround?
