Getting stuck and unsure what to do (re game progression)

Did not attempt any of the Secret Empire quests (also did not venture into Halls of Healing).

Tried to accumulate basic and class catalysts but the drop rates are strangely low or was it the same previously?

Is there a prolonged period where it is just grinding and until ... when?

What level? You can usually do story quests to advance pretty steadily.

for what I'm reading, I'm assuming you are fairly new to the game. if so, I recommend to upgrade only good 3*s until you get a good 4* (sometimes it takes time). grind arena as much as you can, and do those specific quest to gain resources you need (be patient). join a good alliance that's willing to help you grow. be organize and think ahead. try to do the hardest quest you can without using pots or revives,( use them if you are about to be done and need that extra help).

do the Monthly quest (master and heroic) good value for your level, hell for any level I would say! grind the arenas for more shards and even 4*s

Definitely do heroic mode of event quest and grind the resources to rank your champs and play arena

Make sure you are in a good alliance. I'm all for loyalty but sometimes an alliance can hold you back.

They're both right. You have to do the monthly special events to 100% completion. You get tier 4 basic catalyst frags for completing easy, normal and heroic difficulties. If you can find a good alliance you will also stand a better chance at getting tier 4 basic catalyst frags (if advanced tier) or a full tier 4 basic catalyst if in the expert tier.

Oh, and I don't know what you're spending your units on, but I would be spending them on refills and doing the special events and even the things like hall of healing. If 60 units for two refills allows you to get two silver AQ potions you saved 70 units from having to buy them from the store.

Maybe do something like road to the labyrinth? It doesn't reward a whole lot of xp but the rewards are decent. Definitely finish the monthly quest as well, they reward catalyst fragments and other stuff too. Keep saving up fragments from daily quests until you get a champion you really want that you can base a team around
