Killmonger's true strike

I would like to find out does Killmonger's true strike has some activation bugs or it's just me.
I played Killmonger a lot. Got very good with him. But there are some special attacks that in order to get true strike when enemy recovering from them I have to take damage from last part of animation. The only way I can get true strike against IMIW is by by letting hit me with the last part of his specials when I have counter punch active. Than I rush into him and get TS. It's impossible to get TS if you block or dexterity his specials.
So, is this a bug or there are some technic? Please share your knowledge.

Yeah it's hard
A lot of the champs came before him and there was never a game mechanic were you had to hit a champ while they were still in their attack animation

Obviously, some later champs were made to counteract the true strike mechanic, but yeah
Basically it's part of the game and it's tough
