Is it possible 5* features didn't include new champs if you didn't update? moderator please!

I opened 5 5* Featured crystals without being on the new update and got 0 of the 6 new champions. To me this was upsetting, but not impossible (about a 25% chance of that happening). But I've spoken with others and now I've got anecdotal evidence of nearly 30 featured crystals being opened without the update and without a single new featured crystal (about a .01% chance). The one person I know who got a new champ had the update. Please investigate if there is any possibility of this correlation.
