    Check out the old Marvel comics series Secret Wars, which is very much the basis for this game IMO.

    Ignoring the obvious, CoC was the first limited series published by Marvel Comics, way back in 1982. It was essentially a game between the Collector and Death in order to bring Collector's brother, the Gamesmaster back from the dead. they each chose teams of 12 champions from Earth (rules where no gods, robots or aliens), and they broke out in teams of 3v3 match-ups. It included some "dream fights" of the time like daredevil vs iron fist, black panther vs wolverine, and Cap vs Sasquatch.

    It’s a superhero contest game where household name characters like Doctor Strange, Wolverine, Venom, Iron Fist, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America take a back seat to the likes of Domino, Hyperion, Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Void and Blade.

    so to make the contest of champions.....

    you start by getting some champions....
    then you make the strong ones weak and the weak ones strong....
    then you get them ready to fight each other....
    but.....
    just as they are about to fight you turn the contest off and do some maintenance.....
