Never EVER sell champs. If you are in a position where selling one champ will get you a new champ with a higher star rating, it's worth just waiting to dupe another champ naturally. After all, you get about as many shards from a natural dupe as you do by selling a champ iirc

If you are trying to get a featured crystal before it expires, selling a bad 4* can make sense. The don't ever sell crowd are wrong. But if you want to get a 5* a little bit sooner it's probably not worth it.

Don’t sell champs. Period.

I once went ‘I’m going cold turkey quitting the game!’.
This was around the coming of 5* champs, shortly after.
Made that decision, sold off ALL my champs, with the exception of my then AQ team (wanted to at least finish that for the ally). From all the shards, I went and pulled CM (twice) and Magik as 5*. Back then, Magik was positively **** unduped, so not full of glee there.

Of course my departure didn’t last. Less than a year later (it did provide a fairly long pause), I came back and haven’t left since. But I still regret having sold everything. The time it took to rebuild my roster was unnecessarily long. Try running arena on 3 4* champs and 2 5*.. I had to rebuild from scratch, in veteran bracket. But I wanted to keep my Gamora, DD OG and Spidey (4/40 each) and CM and Magik. So I ploughed through.
Once I caught up with old alliance mates, the pace picked up again.

Can’t complain at all about my roster. Absolutely not.
Yesterday I went for a test run in LOL to see how far my stash and newly ranked SL would get me. Ended up bashing Maestro’s skull in...
But that could have been a lot sooner. The more champs you have, the more options are open to you playing wise.

And as said, with the danger rooms coming (massive hint that indeed we’re heading into X-men territory), selling just isn’t smart.

It's your call and you already know the repercussions of doing so, but every year around this time I get the itch... My favorite part of this game is ranking up champs... so what I do is sell all 2-4 star champs that aren't maxed, i don't have a need for other than arena, and I don't absolutely love using. Last year this got me an extra 4 5* champs during the Spark featured crystal and I pulled doc ock, nightcrawler, spark, and yellowjacket. These 4 helped my progression a lot more than anything I sold. That being said I am in a semi-retired alliance so we don't care about prestige. In the end the call is yours, but for me selling is fine

Not carnage already duped him, but i did get a little depressed when I duped she hulk last night
