AW1 defender issue

My Alliance noticed that when we placed our defenders in Alliance War that our Hero ratings were quite high. Example the MODOK that we placed as Boss had a hero rating of 30,000+. When the war started, however, the MODOK had a hero rating around 8,500. Why does it fall?
