I open a 5* crystal from incursions and get Magneto, I open Hotel M.O.D.O.K awakening gem and it is mutant. Kabam you are teasing me for that buff and I love it!

Don't know about a sign. About a year a go, I managed to pull Archangel from a grandmaster crystal, then got a mutant awakening gem from a rift. Hey, congrats though. I'd still wait before using it, but hey, if his buff is anything like Colossus or Hulkbuster, then you may have a new top tier champ on your hands. (It could also be a situation like Havok, where the new Magneto will still be awesome, but not reliant on his awakened ability...this would free up that awakening gem for someone like Omega Red or even a possible future 5* Wolverine)

Don't use them before that buff, I took oml to r4 and was actually disappointed

I got a Magneto as my 2and 5 star and believed he was going to get a buff and then used a awakening gem a year and a half later Magneto buff was announced
