In that sense, from my limited experience so far, Root is a not needed.
It's an annoying mechanic that can be tweaked and used on certain champs to kill you OR at least causing a lot of health lost.
We had Root with specials and Root with heavy attack.
There might not be Root on opponent.
Who knows? Only KABAM knows.
Right now, Root is indeed challenging.
If we give positive feedbacks to them, I'm afraid the worse might happen.
I'm afraid that Root will eventually be used in AW.
Might be used on certain champs that have multiple hits on specials and heavy attack that are hard to evade.
That will cost YOU, the player.
We don't even talk about nodes interaction just yet which might be more deadly.
My stand: Root shouldn't be in the game.
The game has already sufficient difficulty, there is no need to add more.
Last month secondary event was not one players loved. Now this...
How are you supposed to challenge the more experienced players, then?
Thanks Kabam.
There are interactions like OG Black Widow's heavy attack which is very difficult to evade while rooted yesterday which is fine, but also since she has evade chance and your parries often fail, you're left to basically intercept to get openings since block baiting heavies is now dangerous. That was the only fight that was a little annoying for me.
Some cool things about it are the ability to punish specials that you normally wouldn't be able to, and it has some fun interactions with champs like Tigra who rely on spacing.
I wonder if there could be a node design where you are to perform various tasks during the fight that would prevent you from being rooted if you complete them successfully. For example, "So Sayeth Doom" and the Grandmaster fight has such prompts. If you complete the tasks, you can avoid being rooted. However, you can also intentionally not complete the tasks if being rooted is advantageous for whatever reason. That puts a lot of control in the players hands which is always fun.
It makes avoiding multi hit specials/heavies harder. And when your 2020 new champions have far reaching, multi-hit specials (Tigra, Black Widow Deadly Origins, Mole Man, Sasquatch, etc), it makes everything a lot harder without being more fun.
As a bit of an aside - Tigra benefits from spacing (unblockable, etc). Root seems like it both helps and hurts her depending on if she is on offense / defense. That is one champion that I can think of so far, where Root will have unintended interactions.
Root on heavy does make it a little harder. Most people are used to dashing back so some of the heavies aren't etched in your brain.
1. Pairing root with Combo Party? Just not a good idea. We haven’t seen the mechanic and the possibility of slipping up is high, and as others have mentioned, there’s no opportunity for a do-over in this month’s side quest
2. I thought devs were moving away from straight punishing nodes and more towards rewarding the player for actions taken...perhaps a successful Dex while rooted could result in a benefit, like a small fury passive or something
3. There did seem to be some glitches when attempting to counter, dropped inputs resulting in not blocking or parrying, a slight delay in moving after root expired, and if you are able to successfully parry, you get one medium hit to push the defender away and that’s it. Also the timer in today’s root quest was too short if the AI isn’t throwing specials frequently
Ultimately I’ve been able to navigate each of the 3 itemless, and I’m an average skilled player at best, but I don’t particularly find the mechanic fun to deal with. I’m not sure why it’s needed other than, just to have another punishing node. Frankly, I’ve really enjoyed the new class nodes in the Cav side quests, because I’ve had the chance to role out different champs, and I’ve been hoping for more of that kind of interaction. Ultimately this is supposed to be fun, right?
