Event decisions

I just pulled a 5* Ægon today and was able to take him to rank 4 and sig 92. With the event coming I thought I would go for shards for both sessions. My desire to rank 5 Ægon has me sitting on the fence now. Are the upgrade material rewards good enough to take over shards? Opinions on which route I should go?

The posts about the material not being good are mostly coming from people with lots of 6* R2 who have a shortage of other materials needed for more 6* R3 (mostly T2A and t4cc while they have an overflow of T5B). But, As for a 5* needing to go from R4 to R5, these materials are still useful.
Would you rather have an R5 Aegon guaranteed with the right material, or a new 5* groot and iron man who won't ever help you progress? Sure some people will get some nice champs from the shards, but some are going to get utter disappointment too. Unless you're in dire need of iso or the T5B would just go into overflow , and if your aimining to R5 a 5*, the rank up sources still make sense compared to gambling on a crapshoot of RNG champ pulls from the shards.
Let's not forget that all players are not loaded with deep max 5* rosters and some are still building them up to get through act 5 and 6. If you only have a couple 5* R5 (or none), this can get you a couple much quicker and that could be game changing for being able to progress in story mode or completing a harder level of monthly eq.
Shards are not always better. Anyone pulling juggernaut, groot, etc from these shards is going to be disappointed unless all they want is the iso from dupes. But of course the big youtubers have spoken based on where they are in game so the gospel in the forum says you should follow suit. Do what makes sense for your current goals and be prepared for RNG to play it's hand in your shard pulls if you throw the dice looking for the next good champ. Some will be happy, some will be disappointed depending in their RNG luck if they're banking on a god tier pull to help their roster out.
