I won a fight by pausing, I only had my Sasquatch that did damage, against a Scorpion, immune to rupture, I paused and let my Kindred deal with the opposing attacker, victory
You didn’t won, your opponent lost the match since he wasn’t able to score even 15k points. Adjusting your roster to match the meta, is what you should do instead of pausing. Good players are laughing at you for pausing, good pausers are lagging at you too, since you waited to take enough damage and then pause 🤷♂️ And additional you had the stupidity to make a post, bragging about it 🤦♂️
Funny, it says I won, if you think it's wrong, complain to the kabam that makes this possible, usually the defeated fool calls the smart guy a coward... lol
Just gross how fair play gets thrown out the window. The pause isn’t there for strategy it’s a quality of life feature there for people who have interruptions in real life. Using it to conserve points is why nice things get taken away.
Equivocating it with things like taking a knee in football is beyond silly to me because at that point you didn’t even play the game. Or if I’m being generous you sat your entire team for a full quarter. That’s a forfeit not a “clever play”
You must hate sam hinkie and people like that huh
Yup. Ruins the NBA for that to be part of the game.
Do you consider taking a knee in (American) football or walking the ball up the court at the end of a basketball game to run out the clock cheating or cowardly? What about intentionally walking a power hitter in baseball in the bottom of the 9th? Battlegrounds is about strategy as much as skill. Knowing when to fight and when not to is part of being strategic.
Pausing at the start of a match already comes with a 25,000 point penalty. That’s not enough? If you can’t score half the available points in your match then the same “play better/build a better deck/learn the meta” comments can be directed at you.
Especially in this meta, choosing your battles makes more sense than going into a fight you know you can’t win.
The “it’s a fighting game, you should have to fight” argument goes out the window for me when you can still lose if you KO the defender and your opponent doesn’t. It’s not about winning a fight, it’s about maximizing points earned in the match.
The only thing that bothers me about pausing opponents is that it drags out the match and I’m usually crunched for time when I play.
Taking a knee in football isn't the same as pausing in BGs. It's not a strategy to keep the ball away from the other team. You still lose downs when you kneel and the clock keeps running. It's used when you've basically won the game. Same with walking the ball up slower in basketball.
I'm a bit surprised by the response in this thread, especially coming from several folks who have in previous threads stressed the importance of how BG is a competitive mode, but is now suddenly okay with people literally sitting on their hands and still getting to win matches.
Objectively, pausing to win points in BG is a textbook example of a game exploit:
--It's a mechanic entirely outside of champion abilities and level design (the nodes). No champion or node references or supports the use of the pause button as an intended gameplay mechanic to help win fights. --The opposing player can't interact with it, prevent you from doing it, or are even aware you're using it during match. --It completely obsolete an equivalent intended gameplay mechanic that is more difficult to execute (dexing/parrying to fully evade damage until the timer runs out) --There is no other precedent supporting its use as a gameplay mechanic for winning fights. I.e. There is no other game mode where pausing can help you win a fight you would otherwise lose. --It is inconsistent with other design choices even just within the BG game mode, specifically forfeiting. I.e If it's an intended mechanic, why would pushing the exit button give you zero points, but pushing the pause button and waiting for the round to finish gives you 15k points?
I also find strange the narrative people keep repeating that somehow if a player can't score 15k points, then they don't deserve to win. But in this scenario, the person who pushed a single button at the top of the screen deserved to win? Like somehow they are the superior player because they didn't even bother engaging in the fight?

You make some good points.
I don’t think it’s an exploit because: - everyone has equal access to it - you sacrifice more than 50% of your points if you do it at the start of a fight - it’s not some unbeatable, easy win strategy - it’s a gamble, your opponent may score enough points to win the round. - most importantly, Kabam knows about it and they haven’t announced it as an exploit or addressed it formally
I don’t think someone who paused and wins is superior but I also don’t think someone who says “oh well, this is my only choice” and takes their Hit Monkey against an Ultron in this meta in the final round is playing smart when they could take the 15k guaranteed points and hope their opponent slips up.
If you have some personal definition of fair play and don’t like it I understand that but I also think the perspective that the mode is all about maximizing points is valid. That’s my view on it after the last scoring change. It is no longer about winning your fight. It is about maximizing your score. In many cases it is better to do less damage and finish with more health than to get the KO. Pausing is taking the “maximizing possible points” approach to the extreme but in some situations it is probably your best bet to get the most possible points that round.
I’m all for a solution to remove it, but while it’s still an option that is open to all players, some forum users degrading players that do it seems uncalled for.
From a non-game designer perspective, the options seem to be. 1. Continue to allow it knowing a lot of players hate it. 2. Further penalize it by shifting points away from remaining health and towards damage dealt and/or time. 3. A direct penalty for pausing. 4. Cause a forfeit of the round if a player pauses.
It has been explained that fully removing the button will not change things. The game can still be “paused” by leaving the app. This means option 3 or 4 can penalize unintended app interruptions. Some would say it’s a fair trade, some will not like losing because their “low battery” notification popped up.
I think #2 makes the most sense but it will have impacts on the meta that may not fit their goals.

They addressed. Last month there was a topic about this. I didn't find yet.
If you’re talking about the thread about point farming, all I remember them saying was that they could detect if you tried to pause to hide your point farming but stretching out your losses. They did not come out and say pausing while trying to win is an exploit.

This is a very insightful and mature response. Fair points all around and I agree with the final conclusion whole heartedly. I just find it incredibly disappointing to see anyone in the community try to rationalize pausing as a strategy and I find it shocking so many that decry using something in a way other than it’s intended use are ok with this.

Happy to have this opinion, tanking totally ruins sports and makes many leagues unwatchable now.
And just to avoid this chaos, I'm relaxing with my 60 points in this meta without hype ghost fantaman werewolf sasquatch etc . I'm quantum 2 and this is the highest I might would get till now in bgs
This is why I quit playing this season. Sitting there waiting for a paused matchup. Nothing worse than sitting there waiting for the timer to run out because your opponent doesn’t know how to play the game. After 12 matches and this happening in 10 of those matches I decided to give up on this season because I am not playing battlegrounds to pause the game.

I understand the thought process here and see where you’re going, but it’s not quite comparable. The big difference between what you described and what’s happening here is proportional. In football and basketball, those delay tactics are only deployed in the last seconds of the game, and when one team has already put in the work and established a lead over the other.
This is different from what’s happening here because to pause for one entire round is somewhere between 33-50% of the match. To sit that much out in any other context would be a guaranteed loss. If somebody were to pause for the last 5-10 seconds, I have a lot less of an issue with that as compared to pausing a whole fight. At least in that case they participated and made it to the final stretch.
Kabam is well aware of people doing it. If they wanted to stop it they'd have found a way around it.
I agree that people are currently allowed to do it and that Kabam is aware of people doing it. I disagree that they would have already fixed it if they want to. There has been discussion from Kabam staff saying they are not fond of it and are looking for a solution. It’s a complex situation because there are legitimate uses of the pause button. People get phone calls while playing, people have things come up in real life that take their attention for a few seconds.
Personally, my solution would be to give a finite pool of pause time, say 30-45 seconds, per round/match. But mechanically that may be very hard to implement.
Toss out the pause button from BG mode. It is 2024 and we are still debating this?
No. Kabam needs to fix the no fight timer bug that has been reported to them for 18 months. When there’s no BG fight timer, pausing is the only way to see how much timer is left.
Also… have you never sneezed when playing or need to pause to deal with something IRL?
The pause button is chicken stuff...I don't bother. If I've made a mistake, I'll take the punishment.
The biggest difference will always be the strength of your deck. I see it now in D2, I'm moving forward now because I'm facing players with 5/65s and 6R1s…it's the same as when I normally face decks full of 6R5s and 7R2+ with my 7R1s and R3/4s.
My R4 Apoc, 7R1 Frost and 5/65 ascended 200 sig Korg cause an incredible amount of problems in defense so far…
7R1 Sunspot and Dragonman, as well as R3 Hyperion, have been my best attackers, along with R4 Shuri, R3 Scorpion and HT, which are unfortunately often banned.
