Champion Spotlight - Corvus Glaive

edited April 2018 in Champion Spotlights
Corvus Glaive is Thanos’ right-hand man and the sly, cunning lieutenant of his army. The only thing deadlier than this master strategist’s tactical mind is the halberd he yields to swiftly slice through his enemies.

Missions from Thanos
Corvus Glaive has 4 missions to accomplish. Whenever he completes a mission, he gains 1 Persistent Charge and a Cruelty Buff, increasing his Critical Damage Rating by 3000. Missions can be completed in any order.
Corvus Glaive starts the fight with a number of Cruelty Buffs equal to his Persistent Charge.
- Mission 1: Eliminate Avengers: Knockout a member of the Avengers. Once this mission is complete, Corvus gains 10 additional Glaive charges when fighting against a member of the Avengers.
- Mission 2: Sabotage Technology: Knockout a Tech Champion. Once this mission is complete, Tech Champions have 25% reduced Ability Accuracy.
- Mission 3: Hunt the Uncanny: Knockout a Mutant Champion. Grants Safeguard against the opponent’s Special 2 Attacks if the synergy with Wolverine, Wolverine (X-23) or Storm is active.
- Mission 4: Challenge Defenses: Use a Heavy or Special Attack to knock down an opponent that used Evade or Auto-Block in a fight. Once this mission is complete, his True Damage Buff becomes a True Strike Buff if the synergy with Proxima Midnight is active.

Developer Note: You can complete more than one mission at the same time! If you find a Nightcrawler and he Evades, you can complete Mission 2 and Mission 4 in one fight. All bonuses coming from his Missions are Persistent.

Glaive’s Immunity
Corvus Glaive does not take damage from Cold Snap, Bleed and Shock Debuffs while his Immunity is active. When Glaive's immunity reactivates or is disabled, all Debuffs listed above are Purified and Corvus Glaive takes 60.2 damage.
At the start of the fight, Corvus Glaive gains 20 permanent Glaive charges, granting him True Damage and guaranteed Critical Hits with his glaive as long as his Immunity is active. A charge is spent every time Corvus Glaive hits with Basic Attack using his glaive.
Corvus Glaive’s blade is damaged after he uses all of his Glaive charges, disabling his Immunity for 50 seconds. Corvus Glaive cannot inflict Critical Hits while his Immunity is disabled.
When Glaive’s Immunity reactivates and if he has 0 Glaive Charges, he regains all of them back.

Developer Note: Corvus Glaive is designed to deal a lot of damage from the start of the fight, making him great for players who are interested in the Legends title.

When Knocked Down
Corvus Glaive’s blade is briefly damaged if he’s knocked down by a Heavy or Special Attack, disabling his Immunity for 3 seconds.

Well Timed Blocks
Inflicts an Armor Break, reducing the opponents Armor Rating by 352 for 4 seconds. Additional Armor Breaks are inflicted for each active Armor Up effect on the opponent.

Special 1: Atomic Fissure - Corvus’s glaive splits atoms in the air, launching a cosmic blast towards the opponent.
+842 Attack Rating if the opponent is suffering from an Armor Break Debuff.

Special 2: Piercing Slash - Corvus uses his glaive to cut through the opponent’s defenses with exceptional speed.
When Glaive’s Immunity is active, this Special Attack is Unblockable and instantly drains 20% of the opponent’s Power if they are at max Power.

Developer Note: Players will be able to push the opponent to the Special 3 Attack and then push them back to a Special 2 if you finish a combo with this Special Attack. 20 Glaive charges provide just enough Power for Corvus to get to his Special 2 Attack!

Special 3: Glaive Toss - Corvus Glaive tosses his weapon, intercepting it right before it strikes the opponent and using the momentum to power a devastating close-range attack.
+1926 Attack Rating if Corvus Glaive has at least one Glaive charge. This amount is doubled if he is below 10% Health.

Signature Ability: Glaive of Immortality
As long as Glaive’s Immunity is active, he cannot die. Instead of dying, 4 Glaive charges are removed. If Corvus Glaive performed a Well Timed Block against that attack, 2 Glaive charges are removed instead.
If Corvus Glaive is able to spend all of his Glaive charges in less than 30 seconds since they were first activated, the cooldown to get them back is reduced by 35%.

Developer Note: An aggressive playstyle will enable users to reduce the cooldown time on Glaive’s Immunity by a substantial amount.

Synergy Bonuses:

Hunt the Uncanny with Wolverine, Wolverine (X-23) and Storm (Unique)
Corvus Glaive: Knockout a Mutant Champion. Once this mission is complete, Corvus receives Safeguard against the opponent’s Special 2 Attack if Glaive’s Immunity is active, preventing him from losing more than 5% Health from a single hit.
Wolverine, Wolverine (X-23), Storm: +10% Attack Rating at the start of the fight.

Challenge Defenses with Proxima Midnight (Unique)
Corvus Glaive: Use a Heavy or Special Attack to knock down an opponent that used Evade or Auto-Block in a fight. Once this mission is complete, his True Damage Buff becomes a True Strike Buff.

Infinity Enemies with Nebula, Thor (Ragnarok), Doctor Strange and Captain America
All Champions gain +6% Attack.

Recommended Masteries:

Glass Cannon, Recoil, Double Edge
Corvus Glaive has really high damage output at the start of the fight, making him one of the best Champions in the game if you want to finish short to medium fights very fast. Pairing him up with those Masteries will enhance his ability to deal massive burst damage at the start of the fight.
Corvus Glaive does not take damage from Bleed effects as long as Glaive’s Immunity is active, getting the benefits of Double Edge but not taking Bleed Damage.
Willpower, Recovery
Corvus Glaive does not take damage from Bleed, Shock and Coldsnap, but the Debuff will still be active on him, enabling Willpower to recover Health. Recovery will increase the amount of Health regenerated by Willpower.
Courage
Corvus Glaive’s Signature Ability, Glaive of Immortality, allows him to stay at 1% health and not die while he still has his Glaive charges. Courage at max level will grant him 20% increase Attack Rating when he is below 50% Health.

Strengths:

Spider-Man, Nightcrawler, M.O.D.O.K.
Corvus Glaive can potentially defeat an opponent with 100% True Strike uptime when synergizing with Proxima Midnight. All players have to do is wait for the opponent to use Evade or Auto-Block just once and then after knocking them down, Corvus Glaive will get True Strike.
Iceman, Morningstar
Corvus Glaive does not take damage from Cold Snap and Bleed when Glaive’s Immunity is active making him a natural counter to Iceman’s Coldsnap at the start of the fight and Morningstar’s Bleed when taking hits.

Weaknesses:

Scarlet Witch, Groot
Champions who have abilities that activate when they take a Critical Hit will be one of Corvus Glaive’s weaknesses since he always inflicts Critical Hits with his Glaive attacks as long as he has Glaive charges.
Mephisto, Doctor Voodoo
Mephisto’s Incinerate and Doctor Voodoo’s Poison can inflict damage to Corvus Glaive even if his Immunity ability is active.

I managed to luck out with one FGMC and landed 5* Corvus, Just playing around with him I can see that his damage can ramp up pretty quickly as long as you get the right fights, while the spotlight says he’ll be a decent legend run option I can’t quite see it, since unless the path you’re running as Tech/ avenger/ mutant/ evade or autoblock champ then he won’t be as strong as say gwenpool or blade. I do have a few questions however.

How does Corvus’ signature ability scale? For example with the 5* I can see that level 200 is 40% decrease in downtime, what is it at sig level 1?

The true damage buff, that is only active while he has immunity, I’m assuming the true strike ability with Proxima is the same?

With The avengers mission, Corvus gets ten extra glaive charges when fighting avengers. Is that ten extra at the start of the fight, or ten extra every time his immunity resets?

It seems like Corvus renders classic Thor completely obsolete with his built in armor break on party and true damage features. Has any character ever so completely replaced a champ of the same class before?

They have one characteristic that’s similar and that’s armour break when they parry, if you read their abilities Thor armour breaks on stun, not parry. Saying that Corvus renders Thor obsolete would be like saying oh look gambit can stun on specials, he’s rendered Thor obsolete. Corvus has a very niche role, he doesn’t render anyone obsolete.

He doesn't render Thor obselete in that his armour break is a lot lower, and 'only' triggers on Parry, not Specials.

However, Thor can't armour break if you're on a stun immune node; whilst Corvus can. Plus his first twenty hits all have guaranteed criticals.
Plus his S1 gets an attack bonus on top of the armour break bonus, if you can combine the two.

Special One with Armour break + Attack bonus + Guaranteed Critical with True Damage = OUCH!

Corvus armour break is a reduction of 330. Thor’s is 1600. I don’t know exactly how diminishing returns works in this situation but it might not even be possible for Corvus to reach the same amount of reduction that Thor does in one parry, even if Corvus did 4 or 5 before the armour break runs out.

If I had to choose between a massive armour break like Thor’s but can’t do it on stun Immune, or a much smaller armour break but I can do it on stun Immune, I’d much rather Thor’s.

They both have their uses, Thor is not obsolete.

Hi guys. A couple of questions, please:

    Well Timed Blocks
Inflicts an Armor Break, reducing the opponents Armor Rating by 352 for 4 seconds. Additional Armor Breaks are inflicted for each active Armor Up effect on the opponent.

Does this mean that if the opponent has six armour up effects (let's call him 'Howard', shall we?), then a single well-timed block will break all six and leave poor Howard with seven armour breaks totalling a 2464 Break? Are there any limits on this at all?

Special 2: Piercing Slash - Corvus uses his glaive to cut through the opponent’s defenses with exceptional speed.
When Glaive’s Immunity is active, this Special Attack is Unblockable and instantly drains 20% of the opponent’s Power if they are at max Power.

Clearly the Power Drain only occurs if the opponent is at Max Power. However, can you clarify: is the Special attack also only unblockable if the opponent is at Max power? Or is it always unblockable if Immunity is active, even at lower power levels?

At the start of the fight, Corvus Glaive gains 20 permanent Glaive charges, granting him True Damage and guaranteed Critical Hits with his glaive as long as his Immunity is active.

Finally: what's a 'guaranteed critical hit?' Is it subject to reduction by Fatigue stacks?

You've suggested Switch, Groot, Voodoo and Mephisto as effective opposition. I reckon an Awakened Ant-Man could do pretty well against him, especially if fatigue cuts down on those crits some more...

    1) At sig level 1, that cooldown reduction will be 20%.

    2) Corvus Glaive's True Damage allows him to ignore the opponent's armor and resistances, while Proxima's True Accuracy allows her to stop opponents from evading or auto-blocking. They both have ways to upgrade these abilities into a True Strike effect, which is a combination of these two effects. (Some people just know how to coordinate.)

    3) Once he's completed the Eliminate Avengers mission, he'll gain those 10 extra charges every time his Glaive's Immunity activates when fighting an Avenger.

    1) does his guaranteed crit override glancing?

    2) when he gets hit by a special that would kill him and he still has charges, instead of losing life per hit, and charges once life is gone, and his immunity buff when the special finishes and he’s knocked down, he just dies immediately. This happens with L3s as well. He dies before he gets knocked down. He should have to get knocked down and then hit again to die in that scenario.

Definitely 2 important questions right there. Please answer it honestly, dear KABAM employee. Anyone of you that's knowledgeable on this topic

1 - No. Glancing triggers first. This can be tested with spider-man (black) sp2, where he has 100% crit chance and still can't land a crit when glancing is triggered.

2 - Don't know how that is supposed to work exactly, but I think is currently working as intended. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to defeat him

Corvus is also a black panther civil war counter, with his parry turning Armour into Armour break, BPCW cannot reflect his stun. ygge26b7hp1c.png

Nice work. I was thinking of BPCW also, although I name-checked Howard above. Didn't think of him needing an armour stack to reflect stun. By that logic, Thor can do the same if BPCW only has one stack of armour, which is worth remembering.

So Corvus is pretty awesome against Armoured opponents, then.

It's a shame there's no apparent counter to his Glaive charges apart from "don't get hit". You might have thought balance would have merited him losing one or two Glaive charges each time he is knocked down, or possibly when Parryed.

Is he working correctly? I am using him in a quest for completion and to try him out, and he hasn't picked up any charges, despite knocking out Classic Vision and Hawkeye. He was picking up charges when I was using him Sunday. Now he isn't.

I'm definitely one of those few that didn't sleep over Corvus when his spotlight came out.
I knew he will finish any fight like a lighting but at that time my rosters weren't big enough to go for a 5* featured arena, hence, O settled with the 4* Featured arena. I went twice for him.
By not big enough rosters, I mean rosters that can go for over 30mil points of grinding?
Then it turned out the 2nd round cutoff of his 5* Featured arena went super low that I could've got him if I went for him. Hahaha. What a troll life.

Man it’s crazy. Nobody even made a video about him except for seatins. Then for some reason he blew up in popularity and for good reason. Lol

I would like more clarification on X23 synergy, 10% at start of fight? Is this the whole fight? 10 seconds into the fight?

Yea that low arena score was crazy.. only helpful to those who had deep rosters though.

Plus, Corvus is still a AQ and AW staple, finishing fights quick, especially with the no hidden nodes. Throw on cosmic boosts and spam sp2. Too bad I haven't pulled him yet.
