Why does Iceman lose more then 5% from blocked hits?

his sig ability says: "If Iceman would lose more than 5% of his Max Health from a single source, his Ice Armor protects him from the blow, reducing the health loss to 5%, then it shatters."
is there something obvious that I'm missing here? I noticed that he can take some serious damage without losing the ice armor when taking blocked hits... can someone please shed some light on this for me

    You are missing the "When attacked" above the description of that ability.
    Meaning it won't work unless you get hit

    First it is not his signature but one of his passive abilities.
    When his armor is active (blue circle) he can not loose more then 5% of his health bar. If so his armor shatters (dissapear) untill it freeze back or u use sp3.
    His Sp2 also will shatter his armor.
