mystery of the disappearing alliance

Asking for someone not familiar with Kabam messaging boards (friend/well-wisher/fellow human is too strong) - apparently he got kicked from his alliance without warning and, when looking up said alliance (which won't be named as it violates board policy) saw that it could not be found. I looked up said alliance as well as the members I knew it to have and also could not find it (I have screenshots of its existence to prove it wasn't a mirage). Question: what could have happened? I certainly can't, as leader, delete an alliance. Can this happen arbitrarily to users and what are the repercussions for those in the middle of an alliance war/quest/etc?
