Yeah most would call them mid because if they don't counter defenders, they simply don't have much usage. For example, Joaquin Torres doesn't counter Enchantress as well as Spiderwoman…3 -

How did Iceman counter Modok? He countered Ice Phoenix sure, but not Modok. You probably meant Mephisto2
