No, you will not get banned for using discount iTunes gift cards. I have bought them around Christmas at Costco and used them. But what @KhanMedina is referring to is more likely correct. My guess is…2 -

Lol, they only have about a dozen or more posts saying that there was no update for the month of January since the December update covered both months.1
