If he has a Force Field charge, not an armor up buff, he will consume it to block Mutant's unblockable specials. My guess is that you didn't have a force field charge1 -

My guess is that you are to worried about trying to keep him in overdrive. I am a fellow p2099 user and HUGE fan, but I have caught myself being to aggressive trying to spam sp1.3
