my shards constituting 32k which is 16 crystals has gone missing despite it not having a timer. or any notification of it expiring.

    Definitely did have a timer. If you had clicked on open them and then back out you would still have them as full crystals.

    I'm sorry to hear that you missed out on spending your shards. Limited time events and related items usually expire when the event is over, so the shards should have been spent before the event ended. But if you have any more questions or need help with items in game, please reach out to support by going to the gear icon in game and clicking "Support" under the Account header.
