Undocumented change to Doc Oc or bug/visual glitch?

Today while I was playing with him in Arena I noticed that my unawoken Doc Oc has his active research (the scientific method my last attack builds up) will scale and continue to count upwards/gain research for. It's not just an automatic gain of research... it counts upwards as if he were awoken.

Is this a bug/visual glitch? Is it an undocumented change - because if so is this not just his signature ability?
