You have to ask you self what you want and what you can offer. And at the same time, what does the alliance offer. Then, see if there is synergism between the goals.
For example, if you don't have a lot of time and don't like war, you need to find an alliance that is focused on AQ. And vice versa, if you really like war and want to do war a lot, then find one that focuses on war. Other things to consider include donations, weekly vs. biweekly Summoner Advancement event participation, how active is the alliance as a whole, etc. If you want an active alliance and you look at their membership and most of them have not logged in, in weeks to months, then you won't get very far... At the same time, the more competitive the alliance, likely their will be demands on you to contribute a certain, minimum amount in each events, do you have time for that (given that you got school, work, family, and other life commitments)? So, you have to do your due diligence/homework and make a self assessment of yourself, what do you want (based on where you are at in your game), what can you offer to the alliance, and what the alliance can offer you.
