Is Omega Red good enough not being awakened?

I got this two 5-Star Champions (Omega Red and Masacre) from opening the crystal and it's my first time to try them in the game but as I went to check about Omega Red in some sources, it seems that he needs to be awakened in order to be effective in the game. Is this true? I was happy that they were added in my roster.
