Developer Insight request

Could we please get one of those Developer Insight posts on the benefit of the current help request mechanics.

It seems to me that it only bogs down the servers and the playing experience. Why not make it automatic for players in alliances? Is there anyone that doesn't want to ask for or give help? If there is some value in having to press buttons and wait on server responses I'd like to hear the rationale.
