Can someone explain the war points system?

Kabam makes it confusing. We re in Gold 2 with a rating of 16xx and with a high gold 2 rating near gold 1. Another alliance has a rating of 16xx but has a low gold 2..borderline gold 3 rating.... Why?

Well, to put it bluntly, because war rating doesn't determine your bracket. Your points scored does.

War rating basically measures how often you win and how often you lose against comparable competition. The more you win the higher your rating goes. The more you lose the lower your rating goes. Eventually, presumably on average your rating will drift towards a level where your competition is about as strong as you are, and you'll be winning (and losing) about half the time. That's war rating.

"Gold" and "Silver" and "Platinum" are not ratings. They are war season brackets. Your bracket is determined by how much points you earn. Your alliance and mind could have identical war ratings, but that doesn't mean we both score the same amount of points, even if we both win or lose. We might score more points because we die less often. You might score more points because you placed higher diversity.

Also, most wins look similar but not all losses do. If you lose a close one scoring 145k, and we completely blow a war scoring only 87k (i.e. not even killing all the bosses) our war rating both goes down by about the same amount, but we will score way less points than you. So imagine a scenario where your alliance and mine have identical ratings, and we both win six and lose six. All of our wins are identical. But your losses are close losses and ours are blowouts. You could end up with 360k raw points more than us, and with multiplier you could be over a million points higher. Even though we both will have identical ratings throughout the season. For reference, the entire Gold 2 bracket is, at the moment, about 1.7 million points wide.

Finally, we could just plain skip a war or two due to some problem. If so, our rating doesn't change at all, but we don't score any points. In that way we could end up any amount of points lower while having the same rating.
