Rank up attacker in middle of AW

If i rank up my attacker (eg. r5 stark) in mid of AW, will it take effect right away? Or it will be effective after war ends?

Attacker: Yes, Upgrading takes effect right away.
Defender: No, they stay the way they were initially joined in defense.
