2015/2016 Rank Up Gems Costing Gold

The new 2015/2016 gems 3-4 gems are costing 400k gold to use.

The old 2015 gems from V1 and V2 didn't cost gold to use. Are these meant to be like this or is it bugged?

The 2015 ones never required gold. I ranked up my Star Lord and Storm for free. Only leveling them up required gold.

Yes, this is correct that the 2016 gem costs gold to use.

They don’t cost gold to rank up but for some reason you need to have the amount of gold on hand it takes to rank them up. It’s really weird and I don’t understand why it’s like that.
