Defenders throwing specials while blocking attacks

I was playing Variant 3 and in 2.1 there's a goldpool fight. I was hitting into his block to get my analysis charges up and after the second light attack he just threw a special 1 that stunned me and i lost the match just like that. There wasn't any reason he should've been able to do that, he didn't dash back, and if he dropped his block he would've got hit. He just activated it over my attack. I've never seen this happen before
