I had that exact same problem when I wanted to use 2015 gem on SL. I contacted support and they helped me relatively quickly.

Yeah if it’s important to you then definitely contact support. I had a mystic rank up gem expiring in 24 hours (that I couldn’t use since it wasn’t 2015) and they managed to fix everything up really well.

Just use the 2016 gem and contact support immediately. They will refund the gold, remove the 2015 gem and restore the 2016 gem relative fast, within 24 hrs iirc.
