Can anyone tell me how caiw removes annihilus' control rod?

I've never used a mystic on my team and it always removes it when I hit him. I don't understand, am I missing something?

When annihilus would be affected by a nullify effect while his cosmic control rod is up, his cosmic control rod gets removed instead to purify said effect.

Now, cap iw's unstoppable nullify on kinetically charged basic attacks is still an always present nullify ability, even if there is no unstoppable buff to nullify. There's a similar interaction between annihilus and iron fist's heavy attack.
