AW defenders not registering

I've had 2 alliance members who have placed defenders but it doesn't show on the map. The defenders show they're locked in AW (see picture).

Did they just pick their 5 defenders and join AW, but then forget to actually move them onto defensive nodes on the map ??

You would see their 5 defenders in the overall alliance defense page (10x5 icon grid), but they would not have a node # on their icon).

And officers can NOT just go and place them onto map, it has to be the actual summoner himself that has to first put them somewhere on map before officers can move them around afterwards.

Thanks for your response. I am aware of all this, but they did place before they were disconnected. When they went back to ensure placement, their champs showed locked in alliance but not on the map nor defense page. We couldn't see them on the map nor on the defense page either. Thankfully, their placement did show up briefly afterwards. It was concerning for a moment.
