Dev Diary: A Contest Evolved

We're coming to the end of our series of 4 Dev Diaries on the Future of the Contest, and we're ready to go out with a bang! Get ready for a glimpse into the far future of The Contest of Champions!

This Dev Diary not only covers some improvements to Arenas and Incursions, but will also give you a first look at some features and systems that are still in their Prototyping and early design phase. As a reminder, all information in our Dev Diaries is subject to change as they develop further, but that is especially true of this one!

You're gonna have a lot of questions about some of the features that are far in the future, but we're not going to have many answers yet. That doesn't mean you shouldn't ask or discuss them, just that you might not get a response from us on them.

UPDATE:
Hey Summoners, we're hearing a lot of questions about the lack of an update on Masteries in the Roadmap. This is intentional, but we haven't forgotten about it.

As some of you had brought up, we had plans for a Mastery revamp featured in one of Dorky Diggedy Dave's videos earlier in the year. Unfortunately, while we had it planned, it didn't pass one of our design gates, preventing it from going any further.

Like you, we want to update Masteries and while it seems simple on the surface there are a lot of challenges in changing something that affects every Champion and fight in the game. BUT, we are working on it and we'll get a proper Dev Diary out about it when the time is right. We know it's important to you, as it is to us, that's why we want to get it right and we're looking forward to sharing more on that soon!

Just an arena suggestion: once you hit uncollected, maybe have the phc shards switch to Grandmaster shards?

Everything seems great with this new post just one thing please Kabam replace PHC shards with grandmaster shards in the arenas for cavalier players. It makes the game more free to play friendly and would make an arena grind feel much more rewarding

I'm very curious about this as well. Really hoping to see this happen.

First:

This sounds all very good and Im looking forward to it.

BUT where is the FREE Mastery changes?
This is the most important QoL change ppl asked since the beginning of MCOC.

We need a Mastery page system with free switches since we pay over 20k units to unlock them all.
Switching Masteries on and off takes time and is super expensive.
If you make this happen my faith in you would be 100% restored.

You are on roll with all this super good news (aside from War). Please make this happen as well

All I want is to be able to change my masteries without spending 100s of units each time lol. If you are not willing to make changes free at least let us change them from one mastery to another without resetting the entire thing...

So basically this post can be summed into:
1. QoL changes: Somethings that should already be there and some are.
2. New Gameplay Mechanics (Root and Volume Trigger): Seems to have more punishing potential than rewarding and nobody really asked for it.
3. Fight Replays: does not help with the actual issues in the game.
4. Strikers: WHY DO WE NEED THIS?
5. Incursion: Zero mentions of any reward increase which is the main issue with incursions
6. Arena: It will still be a "grind" with some relaxations for the super grinders. (The arena alternative might help but not with the current set of rewards as it would still be damn near impossible for normal players)
7. Social Progression: Again WHY DO WE NEED THIS?
8. Solo competetive mode: Probably the only good idea on the whole page with zero specifics

Just my review of the "future". anyone thinks otherwise?

Wish mastery swaps were in this, a lot looks interesting, difficult to tell much since it’s mainly stuff distant, but it looks pretty good overall. I’m hoping the solo competition thing could expand to small scale pvp with 3-5 people

Mastery switches should be made easier and less expensive. Maximum 10 units to change or 20k gold or both

But please make them easier to shift

Some nice things, but zero mention of mastery changes in 1 year outlook is so disappointing it takes away from everything else.

This last roadmap fails to address mastery change. They know costs of changing mastery and the time required to do so is a huge issue but not only they fail to change it, which is super easy since most other mobile games do it, they don’t even explain why they are ignoring it.

Some pretty good stuff. Unless I missed it somehow, I see that arena rank rewards will improve, but will milestones rewards improve as well?

Looks good but there’s nothing about making Masteries free or easier to swap once unlocked. Fix that and it’ll be perfect, it’s just ridiculous to charge us every time we swap masteries.

Looks really cool. But as everyone said like the sunday arena has the the uncollected shard crystals. Let’s get a system like that where we replace the PHC for uncollected and above. Maybe grandmaster shards for milestones, or do first 3 milestones the shard crystals and then the final milestones grandmaster shards or just full crystals.

Now on to bigger fish can’t wait to get dates for everyone from dev diary to today diary. All this is great but can’t wait for actual dates. Excited about the new raid bosses, the new solo events (22hr), the sig stone increase.
