How Does Life Cycle Node Work?

I read the node but I do not understand what it means. I keep hitting the defender with heavies but the shield doesn't go and the defender keeps regenerating 10% health. How do I win?

    After knocking down the defender the shield deactivates for x amount of time. You have to kill them when it's deactivated.
